As the world embraces technologies such as 5G, autonomous vehicles, generative AI and the Internet of Things (IoT) there is more and more demand for chips that can power such digital innovations.

Realising this opportunity, Sarawak Microelectronics Design (SMD) Semiconductor was incorporated in 2022 to meet this demand. But that’s not all.

Combined with the potential of our local talent, strategic geographical location and robust infrastructure, SMD’s aim is to cultivate an optimal ecosystem for the semiconductor industry and propel Sarawak to the forefront of being a cutting-edge solutions provider in the region by 2030.

The silicon longhouse of Asia

Establishing ourselves as a high-value semiconductor hub in Southeast Asia begins here, in Samajaya High Tech Zone. Spanning 4.1 hectares, this is where SMD will continue to expand its ecosystem - from R&D and innovation, to global collaboration and local training.

Embedded Hardware & Sensor Solutions
 
Our next-generation Embedded Hardware & Sensor Solutions optimise operational efficiency by providing real-time tracking to capture accurate and quality data. It can be used for various applications including predictive maintenance and data analytics for the Oil & Gas industry, geomatics, marine cadastral surveying, building bridges and others.
 
Currently, SMD is collaborating with the Sarawak Land and Survey Department (JTS)  to use this in developing a breakthrough boundary peg solution for Sarawak.

Reduced Instruction Set Computer - V (RISC-V)
 
Within the semiconductor industry, we are a pioneer of specialising in RISC-V technology and we are committed to harnessing the power of local talent to drive innovation. By combining world-class expertise with homegrown skills, we aim to deliver cutting-edge and customisable solutions for diverse applications.
 
By leveraging on RISC-V's open-source, modular, and scalable architecture, we eliminate costly licensing fees and enable clients to break free from vendor lock-in. Our locally developed solutions are optimised for embedded systems and high-performance computing, offering enhanced security and efficiency.
Integrated Chip (IC) design
 
With skyrocketing demand for semiconductor chips, we are pushing the boundaries for design that not only answer to next-generation technologies, but also to do so in smart, efficient and environmentally sustainable ways.
 
We currently provide analog and mixed signal design, RTL design and digital verification, custom layout and physical design, and full turnkey.
SMD Edge
 
We are leveraging on our expertise and strategic partners to custom design chips that can deliver high performance with low power processors, as well as produce new devices through efficient heterogeneous integration of silicon technology and compound semiconductor, all tailored towards specific demands of edge AI and power management ICs.

By providing scalable, application-specific solutions, we aim not only to enhance the functionality and intelligence of edge devices, but also to promote the development of new AI applications across various industries, from automotive, space and renewable energy, to smart health and smart cities.

The state government will unveil the Holistic Sustainability and Circular Economy Strategy by the year-end to solidify state-owned chip designer SMD Semiconductor Sdn Bhd’s position globally while establishing new industry standards in sustainable business practices.

Sarawak’s chip design company to set up R&D office in UK

The collaboration with UK companies strategically aligns with Sarawak’s own semiconductor sector’s 2030 aspirations to position the state as a semiconductor high-value-added hub in the region, as well as increasing contribution to the state’s gross domestic product (GDP) and investment from the sector.
